Westminster: Winchester's Town

Westminster, Maryland, is located just northwest of Baltimore and is known for its rich and heavily preserved historical culture, lovely suburbs, and extensive arts community. This suburban city is a peaceful counterpart to the nearby bustle of Baltimore, providing a rural feel while still accommodating residents with plenty of amenities and access to cultural events and attractions within Westminster and Baltimore proper.

In 1754, William Winchester purchased 167 acres of land called White’s Level which became known as the city of Winchester. In 1764 Winchester originally named his planned community “Winchester’s Town”, but The Maryland General Assembly later changed the name of the town to Westminster to avoid confusion with Winchester. The city’s population was 18,590 as of the 2010 census, and visitors in Westminster can look forward to visiting some of the oldest historic buildings in the state.
